Royal Haskoning helps Friesland Campina Nigeria to avoid floods

22-12-2011

On the 10th of July 2011 a severe flood affected Friesland Campina Nigeria (WAMCO Lagos) during heavy rainfall. Their properties are lying lower than the surrounding streets and plots, and the public drainage outside their properties (along the roads) isn't functioning properly. During heavy rainfall water accumulates around the site and finally flows into the plant. On the 10th of July there was so much water that it even caused a breach in the wall which is built on the perimeter of the plant. This leaded to inundation of 1.5 to 2 meters at larger shares of the plant's area.  This was the occasion to take action, even though heavy rainfall cuases floods quite often at their site. In fact, flooding at the factory is a recurrence incident.

Friesland Campina asked Royal Haskoning to do research which design measures should be taken for the WAMCO premises in Lagos Nigeria to avoid damage caused by floods, taking into account the proposed extensions of the site. The question is how the water can be discharged from the premises, without being fully dependent on the public drainage.
