The Project ‘Integrated Urban Infrastructure and Sanitation Master Plan for Pekanbaru’ is an ongoing project executed by Haskoning Nederland BV, in close collaboration with the local government staff of Pekanbaru.

The scope of the project is to improve sanitation for the city of Pekanbaru. The project addresses management of wastewater, management of solid waste and flood control. Technical as well as organisational issues are addressed. In this way the project contributes to the millennium development goals the Government of Indonesia has set for the country. Furthermore this project contributes to the development of a national sanitation policy for urban areas. The results of the project should become an example for other cities in Indonesia.
To realise the objectives active involvement of the community is needed. This will be achieved by:
• Using a user-friendly participatory approach that is supported by the community to providing safe, adequate, cost-effective and easily accessible sanitation services;
• Involving communities to promote sustainability and effectiveness of all project activities;
• Providing capacity building, training together with technical measures to improve health and hygiene behaviour and support community health services related to waterborne diseases, and
• Setting up an organisation supported by all the stakeholders that can manage the sanitation situation in Pekanbaru in an effective, economically viable and sustainable way.
